Match Recap

Palmer Hat-Trick Puts Struggling Wolves to the Sword

Chelsea cruised to a comfortable 3-1 victory at Molineux, with Cole Palmer’s first-half hat-trick effectively ending the contest before the interval.

The Blues dominated proceedings from the outset, controlling 67% of possession and registering an expected goals tally of 3.16 that accurately reflected their superiority. Palmer was the chief architect of Wolves’ misery, converting two penalties in the 13th and 35th minutes before completing his treble with a well-taken finish three minutes later.

The statistics painted a grim picture for Gary O’Neil’s side, who remain rooted to the bottom of the table with just eight points from 24 matches. Their 33% possession figure and 85% pass completion rate, whilst respectable in isolation, highlighted their inability to impose themselves on a Chelsea side sitting 15 places above them.

Wolves’ afternoon was epitomised by their defensive frailties. The concession of two penalties inside the opening 35 minutes demonstrated the lack of discipline that has plagued their campaign, with their goal difference of minus-30 now the worst in the division.

Tolu Arokodare’s 54th-minute strike provided brief respite for the home faithful, reducing the arrears to 3-1 and offering a glimmer of hope. However, it proved to be mere consolation as Chelsea’s class told throughout.

The scoreline flattered Wolves somewhat. Chelsea registered 15 shots to the hosts’ 11, with six on target compared to three. The visitors’ 734 completed passes, achieved at a 93% accuracy rate, demonstrated the gulf in quality between the sides.

O’Neil’s tactical switch to introduce Hwang Hee-Chan at half-time and Matt Doherty moments before the break suggested recognition that his initial approach had failed. Yet the damage was already done, with Chelsea’s first-half blitz proving decisive.

For Chelsea, this victory continues their impressive recent form. Five wins in their last six league outings have propelled them to fifth place, just five points off the Champions League places with games in hand.

Wolves’ predicted 1-1 draw proved wildly optimistic. Their current trajectory suggests a long battle against relegation, with just 14 matches remaining to bridge a significant gap to safety.
