Union Berlin 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt: Late Drama Saves Point for Die Eisernen
Nathan Brown’s opener appeared to settle matters before Oscar Højlund’s red card swung momentum decisively
Union Berlin rescued a precious point in dramatic fashion at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei on Friday night, with Leopold Querfeld converting from the spot just three minutes after Nathan Brown had seemingly given Eintracht Frankfurt all three points.
The match remained goalless through a tense first half, with both sides struggling to create clear chances. Frankfurt’s Arnaud Kalimuendo and Oscar Højlund picked up early bookings as the visitors looked to disrupt Union’s rhythm, whilst the hosts gradually grew into the contest without truly testing the Frankfurt defence.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 84th minute when Brown found the net for Frankfurt, capitalising on what appeared to be a decisive moment for the visitors. However, the match took a dramatic turn just two minutes later when Højlund collected his second yellow card and was dismissed, leaving Frankfurt to defend their slender advantage with ten men.
Union Berlin’s numerical advantage proved crucial almost immediately. Querfeld stepped up to convert a penalty in the 87th minute, sending the home crowd into raptures and ensuring the points would be shared. The late equaliser felt harsh on Frankfurt, who had looked comfortable managing the game until Højlund’s ill-timed second booking.
The result does little to help either side’s mid-table ambitions. Frankfurt remain seventh on 28 points but will rue a missed opportunity to extend their advantage over Union, who sit ninth with 25 points. Both teams continue to struggle with consistency, as evidenced by their recent form - Union’s run of draws and defeats extends their winless streak, whilst Frankfurt’s inability to see out victories remains a persistent problem.
For Union Berlin manager Bo Svensson, the penalty conversion will feel like a small victory in what has been a challenging campaign. Frankfurt boss Dino Toppmöller will be frustrated by his side’s inability to maintain discipline in crucial moments, with Højlund’s dismissal proving costly once again.
