Match Recap

The Strongest Edge Past Tachira in Dramatic Quarter-Final

The Strongest secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Deportivo Tachira FC in the first leg of their CONMEBOL Libertadores quarter-final at the intimidating Estadio Hernando Siles in La Paz.

The Bolivian side’s triumph was built on their composure from the penalty spot, with Jair Arrascaita and Victor Abrego both converting crucial spot-kicks to overcome a spirited Venezuelan outfit that had shown little form coming into this tie.

Deportivo Tachira arrived in the Altiplano carrying the burden of a dismal group stage campaign that saw them collect zero points from six matches, conceding 13 goals whilst managing just six themselves. Their winless streak of five consecutive defeats painted a grim picture, yet they demonstrated remarkable resilience in their knockout debut.

The opening period proved cagey, with neither side able to break the deadlock despite The Strongest’s territorial advantage. Antonio Estacio thought he had given the hosts the lead in the 40th minute, only for VAR to correctly rule out his effort for handball.

The match burst into life in the second half. Arrascaita’s 56th-minute penalty gave The Strongest the breakthrough they craved, but their advantage lasted just seven minutes. Carlos Calzadilla levelled proceedings with a well-taken goal that silenced the home crowd and gave Tachira hope of a famous upset.

The drama reached its crescendo in the 82nd minute when Abrego stepped up to convert his second penalty of the evening, restoring The Strongest’s lead with just eight minutes remaining. The Venezuelan side’s discipline had deserted them by this point, with four yellow cards reflecting their growing desperation.

Tachira manager made five substitutions in an attempt to salvage something from the tie, but The Strongest’s altitude advantage and superior fitness told in the closing stages.

With the second leg to be played in Venezuela, Deportivo Tachira will need to overturn this deficit whilst maintaining their improved defensive resilience. For The Strongest, this narrow advantage provides the perfect platform to reach the semi-finals of South America’s premier club competition.
