Standard Liège Spring Surprise as Rouches Down Anderlecht 2-0
Standard Liège delivered their most convincing performance of the season, stunning fourth-placed Anderlecht 2-0 at Stade Maurice Dufrasne to end a miserable run of form that had seen them lose four of their last five matches.
The Rouches, languishing in 10th place with just 27 points from 22 games, produced a masterclass in clinical finishing against a possession-heavy Anderlecht side that dominated the ball but failed to convert their superiority into goals.
Karamoko’s Opener Sets the Tone
The breakthrough came after a feisty opening half-hour that saw four yellow cards brandished by referee Eric Lambrechts. Standard’s I. Karamoko, who had been booked just eight minutes earlier for a robust challenge, showed his quality with a well-taken goal on 29 minutes to give the hosts a precious lead at the interval.
Anderlecht’s frustrations were evident in their disciplinary record, with N. De Cat and N. Saliba both cautioned before the break as Ivan Leko’s side struggled to break down a resolute Standard defence despite enjoying 64% possession.
Said Seals Victory
Any hopes of an Anderlecht comeback were extinguished three minutes into the second half when R. Said doubled Standard’s advantage. The goal came against the run of play, with the visitors having registered 15 shots to Standard’s nine, yet finding themselves two goals adrift.
The statistics told the story of Anderlecht’s profligacy: despite creating an expected goals tally of 2.44 compared to Standard’s 1.21, they managed just four shots on target. Standard, by contrast, made their limited opportunities count with ruthless efficiency.
Tactical Triumph
Standard’s 3-4-3 formation proved perfectly suited to frustrating Anderlecht’s 4-2-3-1 setup, with the hosts content to absorb pressure and hit on the counter. The visitors’ 79% pass accuracy and 505 completed passes counted for little as they fell to a damaging defeat that leaves them six points behind third-placed Club Brugge.
For Standard, this victory provides crucial breathing space in their fight against relegation, moving them five points clear of the bottom two with this thoroughly deserved triumph.
