Palmeiras Run Riot Against Vitoria in Five-Goal Thriller
Palmeiras delivered a commanding 5-1 victory over struggling Vitoria at Arena Barueri on Thursday night, extending their impressive run of form in Serie A’s second round of fixtures.
The home side, sitting second in the table with 76 points from 38 games, made their class tell from the outset against 15th-placed Vitoria, who arrived at the Barueri venue with just 45 points and a concerning goal difference of -17.
Murilo opened the scoring on 24 minutes, capitalising on Palmeiras’ early dominance before Gustavo Gómez doubled the advantage just four minutes later. The hosts were in ruthless mood, with Mauricio adding a third in first-half stoppage time to leave Vitoria shell-shocked at the interval.
The visitors’ frustrations boiled over early in the contest, with Nathan Mendes picking up a yellow card just minutes after falling behind, setting the tone for what would become a disciplinary nightmare for the away side.
Vitoria manager made wholesale changes at half-time, introducing both Riccieli and removing the booked Nathan Mendes in a double substitution, but the damage was already done. The visitors did find a consolation through Dudu on 56 minutes, briefly threatening to mount an unlikely comeback.
However, any hopes of a revival were quickly extinguished as Allan Elias restored Palmeiras’ three-goal cushion seven minutes later. The scoring was completed by Ramón Sosa with 10 minutes remaining, as Vitoria’s discipline completely collapsed with four yellow cards shown to the visitors throughout the contest.
The result maintains Palmeiras’ impressive points-per-game average of 2.0, while Vitoria’s struggles continue with a modest 1.18 PPG that leaves them perilously close to the relegation zone. With a 13-place gap between the sides now evident on the pitch, this emphatic victory showcased exactly why Palmeiras remain genuine title contenders whilst Vitoria face a battle for top-flight survival.
