Mallorca Demolish Sevilla in Son Moix Thriller
Mallorca 4-1 Sevilla
Mallorca delivered a stunning second-half performance to comprehensively defeat Sevilla 4-1 at Son Moix, lifting themselves above their Andalusian visitors in La Liga’s increasingly congested relegation battle.
The match began as a typical mid-table affair between two sides locked on 24 points, but transformed into a showcase of clinical finishing from the hosts after the interval. Vedat Muriqi opened the scoring from the penalty spot on 26 minutes, converting confidently after drawing a foul in the box.
Sevilla’s response came on the stroke of half-time through Neal Maupay, whose equaliser appeared to have steadied García Pimienta’s side heading into the break. At 1-1, the encounter looked destined to follow the pre-match prediction of a low-scoring draw.
However, Mallorca’s second-half surge caught Sevilla completely off guard. Samu Costa restored the home advantage within eight minutes of the restart, before Sergi Darder’s 74th-minute strike effectively killed the contest. Pablo Torre’s stoppage-time effort provided the final flourish to a comprehensive victory.
The result represents a significant shift in momentum for both clubs. Mallorca’s WLWLL form suggested inconsistency, but this performance demonstrated their capability when firing on all cylinders. Their clinical edge proved the difference, converting half-chances into goals with ruthless efficiency.
For Sevilla, the defeat extends their troubling LWDLL sequence and raises serious questions about their ability to climb clear of the relegation zone. Despite creating opportunities, particularly through Maupay’s movement, they were systematically dismantled after the interval.
The victory moves Mallorca level on points with their opponents but crucially ahead on goal difference, improving from -6 to -3. With both sides averaging just 1.09 points per game this season, such margins could prove decisive come May.
Jagoba Arrasate’s tactical adjustments, including the introduction of Takuma Asano, disrupted Sevilla’s defensive shape and created the space for Costa and Darder to exploit. The Basque coach will be particularly pleased with his side’s composure in converting pressure into goals.
