Fluminense Edge Closer to Top Four with Hard-Fought Victory Over Gremio

Nonato and Acosta strike after the break to secure crucial three points at the Maracana

Fluminense strengthened their position in the Serie A top five with a 2-1 victory over Gremio at the iconic Estádio do Maracanã, moving four points clear of their visitors in what proved a tale of two halves.

The opening 45 minutes belonged firmly to the goalkeepers, with both sides struggling to break the deadlock despite Gremio edging the possession battle 48% to 52%. The breakthrough came immediately after the restart when Nonato converted just one minute into the second half, capitalising on Fluminense’s improved attacking intent.

Luciano Acosta doubled the hosts’ advantage on 59 minutes, giving Fluminense a commanding position that reflected their superior expected goals tally of 2.25 compared to Gremio’s 1.58. The Argentine’s strike highlighted Fluminense’s clinical edge in front of goal, converting six shots on target compared to Gremio’s three.

Gremio refused to surrender quietly, with Carlos Vinicius pulling one back on 75 minutes to set up a tense finale. Despite late pressure and a flurry of substitutions from both managers, Fluminense held firm to secure their fifth win in six matches.

The victory maintains Fluminense’s impressive form run of WWWDW and keeps them firmly in fifth place on 64 points, whilst Gremio remain ninth on 49 points despite their own inconsistent WLWLW sequence. The four-place gap between the sides was evident throughout, with Fluminense’s superior passing accuracy (85% vs 82%) and shot conversion rate proving decisive.

Interestingly, pre-match predictions had suggested a 0-0 stalemate, but Fluminense’s second-half intensity proved those forecasts wrong. With their points-per-game average of 1.68 significantly higher than Gremio’s 1.29, this result reinforced the gulf in class between these two sides.

The win keeps Fluminense well-positioned for a potential top-four finish as the Serie A campaign enters its crucial phase.
