Gregoritsch Double Lifts Augsburg Past Battling St. Pauli
Michael Gregoritsch’s second-half winner completed a dramatic comeback as FC Augsburg edged past relegation rivals FC St. Pauli 2-1 at the WWK Arena, moving five points clear of the visitors in the Bundesliga relegation battle.
The Austrian striker proved the difference in what many saw as a pivotal six-pointer, netting either side of half-time to overturn St. Pauli’s early penalty advantage and hand Augsburg only their fourth league win of the campaign.
Despite controlling large spells of the contest, St. Pauli’s profligacy in front of goal ultimately cost them dear. The visitors dominated possession (55%) and registered 15 shots to Augsburg’s 10, whilst posting a significantly higher expected goals tally of 2.22 compared to the hosts’ 1.28.
St. Pauli struck first on 32 minutes through Danel Sinani’s penalty, capitalising on one of three yellow cards shown to Augsburg players in a frantic first-half period that saw Maximilian Wolf and Moritz Baum both cautioned before Ruben Fellhauer joined them in the referee’s notebook.
Gregoritsch drew Augsburg level just nine minutes later with his first of the evening, before completing his brace on 59 minutes to secure the points. The goal proved crucial for a side averaging just one point per game this season, compared to St. Pauli’s 0.75.
The victory moves Augsburg up to 12th on 23 points, whilst St. Pauli remain in the relegation zone in 17th position with 15 points from 20 matches. With both sides carrying negative goal differences of -14 and -15 respectively, defensive frailties continue to plague their campaigns.
ScoresFooty’s prediction model had anticipated a narrow 1-0 Augsburg victory, though the entertaining encounter provided more goals and drama than the algorithms suggested. St. Pauli’s superior possession and shot statistics will provide some encouragement, but their inability to convert chances into points continues to hamper their survival bid.
The result extends Augsburg’s recent form to two wins from their last five matches (WWDDL), whilst St. Pauli’s winless run continues with just two points from their previous five outings (DDLLD).
