Coritiba Complete Stunning Comeback to Beat Cruzeiro 2-1

Coritiba secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Cruzeiro at the Governador Magalhães Pinto stadium, overturning a first-half deficit to claim three crucial points in Serie A’s second round.

The hosts took the lead through Matheus Pereira’s 19th-minute strike, capitalising on their early dominance in front of their home supporters. Cruzeiro, sitting third in the table with 70 points from 38 matches, appeared well-positioned to extend their recent run of form.

However, Coritiba demonstrated remarkable resilience either side of the interval. J. Lavega equalised on the stroke of half-time, converting from close range to level proceedings at 1-1 and completely shift the momentum.

The visitors completed their comeback eight minutes into the second half when Breno Lopes found the net, capitalising on some suspect defending from the home side to put Coritiba ahead for the first time in the match.

Cruzeiro’s afternoon was compounded by disciplinary issues, with Kaiki and Fabricio Bruno both picking up yellow cards as frustrations mounted. The hosts made five substitutions in an attempt to find an equaliser, bringing on K. Arroyo, L. Romero, William, Gerson, and a final throw of the dice with Kaiki’s replacement.

The result will be particularly disappointing for Cruzeiro given their current league position and positive recent form. With a goals difference of +24 and averaging 1.84 points per game, they had been expected to secure maximum points against visiting opposition.

For Coritiba, this victory represents an excellent start to their Serie A campaign. The manner of their comeback, scoring twice in the space of eight minutes around half-time, suggests a squad with genuine character and tactical flexibility under pressure.

Referee Bruno Arleu de Araujo kept control of proceedings despite the competitive nature of the encounter, though five yellow cards reflected the intensity of this early-season clash between two ambitious sides.
