Match Recap
Charlton and QPR Share Points in Goalless Valley Stalemate
Charlton Athletic and Queens Park Rangers played out a frustrating 0-0 draw at The Valley on Friday night, a result that does little to advance either side’s Championship ambitions.
The Addicks, sitting 17th with 36 points from 30 matches, welcomed a QPR side seven places above them in the table, but neither team could find the breakthrough in a match that epitomised the middle-table mediocrity both clubs are desperate to escape.
Early indications suggested this would be a tetchy affair when QPR’s H. Vale was shown a yellow card just four minutes in, setting the tone for an evening where defensive solidity trumped attacking ambition. The pattern continued after the interval when Charlton’s Lloyd Chambers picked up a booking three minutes into the second half.
Both managers turned to their benches in search of inspiration, with QPR introducing K. Saito on 58 minutes before Charlton responded with a triple substitution. Charlie Kelman was introduced on 70 minutes, followed by Chambers’ withdrawal five minutes later, whilst Gerardo Docherty entered the fray in the final minute of normal time. QPR’s Paul Smyth also joined the action with 13 minutes remaining.
The closing stages saw tempers fray further as Charlton’s Harrison Clarke received a yellow card deep into the six minutes of added time, capping a match where neither goalkeeper was seriously tested despite the abundance of substitutions and cards.
For Charlton, this extends their inconsistent recent form - they arrived with a record of DWLLW over their last five fixtures, earning just 1.2 points per game this season. QPR, meanwhile, will view this as two points dropped given their superior league position and marginally better form (DWLDD), though their own 1.42 points per game average suggests they too are struggling for consistency.
The draw leaves both sides treading water in mid-table, with QPR remaining 10th on 44 points from 31 games whilst Charlton stay 17th, now four points further adrift despite having played one fewer match.
