Match Recap

Casa Pia Stun League Leaders Porto with Dramatic 2-1 Victory

Casa Pia produced one of the shocks of the season as they defeated runaway Primeira Liga leaders FC Porto 2-1 at the Estádio Municipal de Rio Maior on Monday night, dealing a rare blow to the champions’ title charge.

The hosts, sitting precariously in 15th position with just 18 points from 20 matches, defied all expectations against a Porto side that had entered the contest with 55 points and a commanding 35-goal difference. The 14-place gap between the sides made this result all the more remarkable.

Casa Pia seized control early when Gustavo Larrazabal opened the scoring in the 12th minute, capitalising on Porto’s sluggish start. The home side doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time through Jérémy Goulart, leaving the visitors with a mountain to climb.

Porto manager’s half-time team talk appeared to have immediate effect as Pablo Rosario pulled one back just 46 seconds into the second half, with the goal coming amid a flurry of substitutions that saw Mateus Fernandes introduced at the break.

The visitors’ hopes of completing a comeback were severely dented when William Gomes received a red card in the 79th minute, reducing Porto to ten men for the crucial final stages. Despite throwing everything forward, the league leaders could not find an equaliser against a resolute Casa Pia defence.

The result was particularly surprising given the pre-match predictions, which had forecast a routine 1-0 away victory. Casa Pia’s recent form—just one win in their last five matches with a points-per-game average of 0.9—offered little indication of the performance to come.

This defeat represents only Porto’s second loss of the campaign, interrupting a four-match winning streak that had seen them maintain their stranglehold at the summit. For Casa Pia, this precious victory provides vital breathing space in their battle against relegation, demonstrating that on any given night in the Primeira Liga, form can count for nothing.
