Guirassy Heroics Rescue Dortmund in Five-Goal Thriller

Borussia Dortmund 3-2 1. FC Heidenheim
SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, Dortmund

Serhou Guirassy’s second-half brace saved Borussia Dortmund from embarrassment as they edged past relegation-threatened Heidenheim in a pulsating encounter at the SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. The result keeps Dortmund in second place with 45 points, whilst Heidenheim remain rooted in 18th despite a valiant display.

What should have been a comfortable afternoon for the hosts against opponents 16 places below them in the table turned into a genuine test of character. Waldemar Anton’s 44th-minute opener appeared to set the tone, but Jan Niehues had other ideas, striking twice in quick succession either side of half-time to stun the home crowd.

The midfielder’s equaliser deep into first-half stoppage time and his second goal just three minutes after the restart epitomised Heidenheim’s fighting spirit. Despite their lowly league position and modest 0.68 points-per-game average, Frank Schmidt’s side showed precisely why they’ve earned draws in four of their last five outings.

Dortmund’s dominance in possession (66%) and shots (19-10) told only part of the story. Their expected goals tally of 3.32 reflected their territorial advantage, yet they found themselves trailing to a side that had mustered just 1.72 xG through clinical finishing from limited opportunities.

The turning point arrived in the 68th minute when Guirassy converted from the penalty spot, before adding a second just two minutes later to complete the turnaround. The striker’s importance to Dortmund’s title challenge was underscored by his composure under pressure, though he did squander a late penalty that could have sealed the points more convincingly.

Dortmund’s 12 corners to Heidenheim’s three highlighted their attacking intent, yet defensive frailties nearly cost them dearly against opponents averaging just 0.68 goals per match this season. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel’s late booking suggested nerves remained frayed until the final whistle.

The victory extends Dortmund’s impressive run to four wins in five matches, maintaining their pursuit of Bayern Munich at the summit. For Heidenheim, moral victories won’t suffice as they remain seven points from safety with their survival hopes hanging by the finest of threads.
