Match Recap

Sporting CP Complete Stunning Comeback at San Mamés

Sporting CP staged a remarkable second-half turnaround to defeat Athletic Club 3-2 at San Mamés, strengthening their Champions League knockout qualification hopes with a dramatic victory that defied their own pre-match predictions.

The Portuguese side entered the eighth league stage fixture sitting comfortably in 7th place with 16 points, whilst Athletic languished in 29th position with just eight points from their campaign. That 22-place gap in the standings seemed irrelevant in a pulsating first half that saw Athletic Club race into a 2-1 lead.

Oihan Sancet opened the scoring after just three minutes, capitalising on Athletic’s bright start at their fortress home. Sporting’s response was swift, with Ousmane Diomandé levelling nine minutes later. The match appeared to be following the predicted script when Gorka Guruzeta restored Athletic’s advantage on 28 minutes, giving the Basque side a crucial 2-1 half-time lead.

The statistics told the story of two contrasting approaches. Athletic’s aggressive pressing resulted in 22 fouls compared to Sporting’s eight, whilst the visitors dominated possession (65% to 35%) and pass accuracy (87% to 74%). Most tellingly, Sporting’s expected goals figure of 1.76 dwarfed Athletic’s 0.57, suggesting their patient build-up play was creating better chances.

That statistical superiority proved decisive after the break. Trincão equalised on 62 minutes before a frantic finale saw VAR overturn a Sporting penalty on 79 minutes. Just when Athletic seemed to have weathered the storm, substitute Alisson Santos struck the winner in the 90th minute to complete a stunning comeback.

The victory maintains Sporting’s excellent Champions League form (WWLWD in their last five matches, averaging 2.0 points per game) whilst Athletic’s struggles continue (LWDDL, 1.0 PPG). With Sporting now well-positioned for the knockout stages and Athletic facing an uphill battle to progress, this result may prove pivotal for both clubs’ European ambitions.
