Arouca Complete Stunning Comeback to Defeat Guimaraes 3-2

Arouca staged a remarkable second-half turnaround to defeat Guimaraes 3-2 at the Estádio Municipal de Arouca, moving five points clear of their visitors in a thrilling Primeira Liga encounter.

The hosts found themselves trailing 2-0 after just 30 minutes as Guimaraes appeared to be cruising towards a comfortable victory. Nicolás Saviolo opened the scoring in the 26th minute before Oswaldo Camara doubled the advantage four minutes later, leaving the home faithful stunned.

However, Arouca refused to capitulate. Alessandro Trezza reduced the deficit on the stroke of half-time, converting in the first minute of added time to give his side a lifeline heading into the break at 1-2.

The momentum shift proved decisive. Ivo Barbero restored parity in the 56th minute before Hyun-seok Lee completed the remarkable comeback with 16 minutes remaining, sparking wild celebrations in the stands.

Statistical Analysis Reveals Evenly Matched Contest

Despite the dramatic scoreline, the underlying numbers suggested a closely fought encounter. Both sides registered six shots on target, whilst Arouca edged possession marginally at 51%. The expected goals metric painted an almost identical picture, with Arouca generating 1.72 xG compared to Guimaraes’ 1.67, highlighting how clinical both teams were in front of goal.

Guimaraes enjoyed greater territorial control, earning six corner kicks to Arouca’s solitary effort, yet they were unable to capitalise on their set-piece opportunities. The visitors’ discipline also became an issue, accumulating four yellow cards compared to Arouca’s one, as frustration mounted during their second-half collapse.

The result sees Arouca climb to 23 points from 21 matches, maintaining their position in 14th but crucially extending their buffer over the relegation zone. For Guimaraes, remaining on 28 points represents a missed opportunity to close the gap on the European qualification places, particularly given their commanding first-half display.

This victory continues Arouca’s recent resurgence, extending their unbeaten run and demonstrating the character that has kept them competitive despite their modest league position.
