Match Recap

Al-Ettifaq Ease Past Strugglers Damac to Strengthen Mid-Table Position

Al-Ettifaq secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over relegation-threatened Damac at Abdullah Al Dabil Stadium, with Georginio Wijnaldum opening the scoring in the 19th minute before Mohammed Ali sealed the points with a second-half strike.

The home side, sitting sixth in the Pro League table, controlled proceedings from the outset against a Damac side whose woeful form shows no signs of improvement. Steven Gerrard’s men capitalised on their superiority early when Dutch midfielder Wijnaldum found the net with a well-taken effort after 19 minutes of patient build-up play.

Damac, rooted in 15th place with just 12 points from 20 matches, offered little in response during a fractious first half that saw three bookings before the break. The visitors’ task became increasingly difficult as Al-Ettifaq maintained their intensity after the restart.

The crucial second goal arrived on 75 minutes through Ali, who capped a fine individual performance by converting what proved to be the decisive strike. The goal effectively ended Damac’s hopes of salvaging anything from their trip to the Eastern Province.

Form and Context

The victory extends Al-Ettifaq’s recent good run to three wins from their last five league outings (WWLWD), propelling them further clear of the relegation zone with 35 points. Their points-per-game average of 1.75 suggests a side comfortably positioned for mid-table security this season.

For Damac, the defeat continues a dire sequence that has yielded just one point from their last five matches (LDLLL). With a goal difference of -21 and averaging just 0.6 points per game, manager Damjan Đoković faces an increasingly desperate battle to preserve their top-flight status.

The nine-place gap between the sides was evident throughout, as Al-Ettifaq’s superior quality and organisation proved too much for visitors who lack both firepower in attack and solidity at the back. Friday’s result leaves Damac six points adrift of safety with 18 matches remaining in the campaign.
