Match Recap

Kramarić Double Fires Hoffenheim Past Struggling Union Berlin

Andrej Kramarić’s clinical first-half brace propelled Hoffenheim to a commanding 3-1 victory over Union Berlin at the PreZero Arena, strengthening their position in the Bundesliga’s upper reaches whilst extending Union’s concerning run of form.

The Croatian striker seized control of proceedings with a 42nd-minute penalty before doubling his tally three minutes later, capitalising on Hoffenheim’s territorial dominance to establish a 2-0 half-time advantage. Union’s defensive frailties were exposed further immediately after the restart when Diogo Leite’s unfortunate own goal effectively settled the contest within two minutes of the second half.

Hoffenheim’s control was evident in the statistical breakdown, with the hosts enjoying 60% possession and completing 78% of their passes compared to Union’s wayward 62%. Despite Union registering more attempts (16 to 9), Hoffenheim’s clinical finishing proved decisive, converting four of their nine shots compared to Union’s solitary successful effort from 16 attempts.

Rani Khedira’s 68th-minute strike provided Union with a consolation goal, but it merely reduced the deficit rather than threatening a genuine comeback. The visitors’ attacking intent was reflected in their 10 corner kicks to Hoffenheim’s three, yet they lacked the cutting edge to capitalise on their set-piece opportunities.

The victory maintains Hoffenheim’s impressive form, extending their unbeaten run to five matches (four wins, one draw) and keeping them firmly planted in third position with 40 points from 20 games. Their +18 goal difference continues to reflect their attacking prowess under their current tactical setup.

For Union Berlin, languishing in ninth place with just 25 points, this defeat compounds their struggles. Their recent form reads dismally - one win in five matches - and their negative goal difference of -6 highlights ongoing defensive concerns that manager’s tactical adjustments have yet to address.

The result validates Hoffenheim’s European ambitions whilst leaving Union to ponder their slide from last season’s more promising campaign.
